Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between Y10W5 and Y10W1?

5 and 1 are design series identifiers. Y10W5 is the current mainstream generation with improved ZnO block formulation. Y10W1 (older generation) is still specified in some legacy tenders — we can supply either.

Why do 500 kV arresters weigh over a tonne?

The ZnO varistor column is much taller and thicker at EHV levels — more blocks in series to withstand higher voltage, each block with a larger diameter for greater energy absorption (2,000 A 2ms). The porcelain housing must also be proportionally larger for creepage and mechanical strength.

Which housing material for substations?

Both are widely used. Porcelain is traditional in substations and offers very high cantilever strength. Polymer is increasingly specified for new builds — lighter, safer and better in polluted/coastal substations. For 500 kV, both options are mature technologies.

Do you supply complete with mounting structure?

Yes — mounting base, grading rings (for ≥220 kV), surge counters and discharge monitors can be included. Tell us your installation arrangement.
